Aaron was hiking alone in blue john canyon, Utah, USA. Ralston is known as the guy who cut his hand off to escape a climbing accident that left him trapped. While he was descending a slot canyon, a suspend boulder become dislodge while he was climbing down from it.

No one knew he was there. After running out of food and water, he was forced to amputate his arm by cutting through the bone using multi-tool that includes the knife. After freeing himself, he walks out from there and he was encountered by a family. They alerted the authorities.

Ralston’s survival story was shown in the movie 127 hours

2. Mauro Prosperi

The Marathon des Sables has been called the toughest footrace on earth. It takes place in the Sahara Desert. Mauro Prosperi is an Italian officer who was lost in Marathon des Sables. Due to the violent sandstorms that caused Mauro Prosperi lost the trail. He ended up disoriented and ran in the wrong direction, ultimately running several 100 km.

After he ran out of the water, he survived by drinking his own urine, ate reptiles and insects. After 9 days, he was found and was taken to an Algerian military camp. This is one of the true and most amazing survival stories.

3. Juliane Koepcke

The plane was struck by lighting above the Peruvian rainforest. Juliana was blown out of the plane, still trapped her seat and landed in the dense forest. She was the only survivor of that flight. Her collarbone was broken and her eyes were swollen. She was able to locate a stream and follows until it fed into a larger river.

Koepcke could not sleep at night in that jungle because of insect bites, which became infected. After 9 days, several spent downstream, she came across a boat and shelter. She slept under it for the night and was found next morning by men. They took her to a nearby village where she was flown and taken to the hospital.

Her story was shown in 2000 documentary Wings of Hope.

4. Andes plane crash

The Uruguay airplane carrying 45 passengers crashed into the middle of the Andes, in the extremely heavy snowpack. Search and rescue operation was launched but after 10 days of no results, the passengers were presumed dead and the search was canceled. More than a quarter of the passenger died in the crash, several others by cold and injury. Those who were alive, 8 of them were killed by the avalanche.

Faced with starvation, the survivors ate the bodies of dead passengers that had been preserved in the snow. Then after 72 days after the crash, 2 men trek 10 days across the Andes and found by Chilean who gave food and alerted the authorities to the existence of the other survivors. The 16 survivors were rescued more than 2 months after the crash. It is one of the most amazing survival stories of all time.

5. Joe Simpson and Simon Yates

Joe Simpson and Simon Yates attempted to climb the difficult and dangerous west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. Simon was sitting higher up the mountain, he could not see or hear Simpson. Due to the bad weather, the whole trip had already taken a long time.

Joe could not climb up the rope.  Joe broke his leg during the ascent.  Simon could not pull him back up.  Badly frostbitten and unsure if Joe was alive or dead. Simon had to make the hard decision to cut the rope in order to survive his own life. After calling for Joe and hearing no reply. Yates thought that Simpson had died. That is why he continued down the mountain alone. He returned to the base camp alone.

Joe survived the 150 ft. fall. He dug himself on ice cave to ride out the storm and battled 3 days without food and water. Joe was severely injured and managed to crawl back to base camp for help.

Their amazing survival stories were made in the movie called Touching The Void.
